Why Corn & Bacon?

The Corn & Bacon Festival at Mossy Creek takes its name from the Battle of Mossy Creek, fought on December 29, 1863, in what is now Jefferson City, Tennessee. During the Civil War, Mossy Creek was an important agricultural community, and the area's abundant supply of corn and cured bacon were valuable supplies for both Union and Confederate armies. Control of these provisions, along with the region's strategic transportation routes, contributed to the military significance of the area.

The festival uses the familiar staples of corn and bacon to honor Mossy Creek's agricultural heritage and Civil War history while creating a fun, family-friendly celebration of Heritage, History, and Hometown Fun. The event connects visitors with the community's past through historical interpretation, local traditions, and educational experiences that support the Heritage Center at Mossy Creek.
